The long awaited group photo from Saturday's Couch Surfing event.

Sunday, April 27, 2008

Saturday I went to a Couch Surfing (CS) party on Maryland Street in Buffalo. The New York City group invaded Buffalo and Niagara Falls and we all got together for a huge party. Ben opened up his house and backyard where we had a cook out with a bon fire. There were over 60 people in attendance including people I met from France, Germany, Sudan, and Syria.
Trying to get 60 people to do a group photo was not easy! (Group photo forthcoming!)
This girl from Sudan freaked everyone out when she picked up a red hot golf ball sized ember from the fire and held it in her hand for like 25-30 seconds.

This unique hand made sign says a lot!

The Buffalo News reported in today's paper that Queen City Landing, a residential/hotel development on the waterfront is well on it's way to becoming reality. The old Freezer Queen site 2 miles from downtown should see construction start this summer on a 125 unit condominium complex. The site had tours this weekend for possible investors in a 5 star hotel of up to 400 rooms. Other plans for the massive site include an additional condo tower, a small marina, and a service retail area.

Today was another great spring day in Buffalo. I went for a walk with my sister-in-law and her son to see the completed Erie Canal Harbor work. Lots of new historic signage was in place.
Some of the old Erie Canal era foundations.

Looking south towards the newly developed section of the waterfront.
Another great Buffalo sunset!
It's a bit dark, but not a bad shot of the Buffalo skyline at dusk.

It was a record breaking (87 degrees, the old record was 8o) spring day and I gather up some friends and family to go for a hike in the Niagara Gorge. Here's our starting point, looking at the Niagara River with the Niagara Power Project in the background.
Yep, that is snow at the bottom of the gorge despite weather in the 80's!
My friend Darrel, my brother, his wife and their dog, Lou joined me on the hike.
There's a lot of cool rocks down there.
You think I could swim to Canada from here?
Rapids, rapids, everywhere!
A hundred year old rock near the whirlpool?
Here's me at the top of a small cliff.

You have to love telephoto lense's! I caught these people in the Spanish Aero car as it crossed over the whirlpool in Canada.
One of the many great views at the bottom.
The huge rapids near the whirlpool.
Which way do I go George?
Even Lucy was tired after the walk back up the gorge stairs!
The view from the rim trail looking north.

I spent my afternoon walking along the Niagara River in Fort Erie Canada with my friends Luke and Darrell. It was a beautiful Spring day for it. We watched the huge ice flows moving down the Niagara River as we walked.
The ice flows were cool to watch as they head towards the Peace Bridge.
A close up of Buffalo City hall.
A close up of the Buffalo skyline from across the river.
Me in front of the skyline along the Niagara River.
This seagull stopped to pose for me!
Our walk led us to Mather Arch, a monument next to the Peace Bridge, given to Canada from Alonzo Mather to celebrate the peace between the U.S. and Canada.
Me in front of the arch.
Here's the entire monument.
Here's a close up of one of the many statues.
A close up of the arches.
A Korean War monument for Canadians soldiers? Whoda thunk?

Some of the cool features on the arch.

A side view!

I saw David Beckhem on the Tonight Show last night and I almost forgot how hot he is. I found this cute picture online to share with you all!
I went to a birthday party on Sunday for John Crandell, the head of the Buffalo Couch Surfing Project. It was a lot of fun and I just happened to meet CS people from all of the world including Austria, Belgium, Germany, and Spain.
John's birthday cupcake was huge!
